A rock sign lets us know how high we are
Day 3: Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
2.15.07By now we are above the clouds. Kenya
(below) looks like an agricultural quilt from an
airplane.
Today is a short but steep hike. Chris had an altitude
headache the night before. I get one when we arrive
at camp.
There are giant senecios (the prehistoric-looking
plant on the right) along the way.
The group takes a break as one member
is feeling ill. We sit on the rocks and talk
about how the biggest challenge of
climbing this mountain is mental.
I imagined myself on Kilimanjaro's
summit every day since I decided to
make this journey.
Climb high, sleep low.
An acclimatization hike
can help trick your body to
get used to the altitude.
At Mawenzi Tarn Camp, we
are at 14,206 feet. I have a
terrible headache and am
resting in my tent while
Chris is taking this
acclimatization hike
leading to Mawenzi Peak.
