Mawenzi Peak
This peak, a shorter but more
technical climb, is part of
Kilimanjaro.
Day 2: Moorland Camp to Kikelewa Caves

Each day begins early -- 6:30
a.m. or so -- with tea or coffee
in our tents. We have breakfast,
stuff our sleeping bags and
things together and hit the trail
by about 8:30 a.m.

This is a long day -- with seven
hours of hiking ahead of us.
Trophine, our camp chef, is amazing.
He set up this lunch (carrot soup, breads
and a fresh salad) in the Second Cave.
We arrived and the napkins were folded
like mapepeo (Swahili for butterflies).

White butterflies -- sometimes as thick as
a snow flurry -- followed us on the trail.
You need to take resting
seriously on this mountain -- it's
a long haul. You need time to
drink, time to sit and time to
laugh.

The fellowship of this group
was fantastic. There were nine
of us all together -- Chris was
the only man.

(The guides called Chris "Papa
Impala" because like the
Impala, he had many "wives"
to care for him on this trip)
